After several weeks of training, I got to 5k on the treadmill, and then did it again a few days later. I’m signed up to run a charity 5k in a little over a week, and I’m excited about it. I probably won’t be able to do the whole thing without some walk breaks (the course is very hilly), but it will feel great to run (yes, run) across the finish line.

How I did it: I used a fine textbook called "German Quickly", with which I made steady progress. My exam (I'm a PhD student) was more difficult that I had hoped, though, but that was because the vocabulary on the exam was a good deal different than what I had been working on. In any event, I passed! Read how I did it…
I haven’t had a soda in 103 days, but I can’t say it has been easy. I often still crave one. I’ve lost 11 pounds during that time, and not chugging “leaded” soda has been one reason why. I’d like to lose another 21 pounds, so I need to stay on this wagon.
Soda is an addiction for me, and it is best for me to go off of it cold turkey. It has now been 73 days since my last soda, and I have to say it has not been easy. Several weeks in, I still craved the stuff. It has gotten easier for me to ask for water at restaurants and at family gatherings and so forth, but even these days, I sometimes really, really want a coke or a dr pepper. But if I am going to lose the weight that I (unfortunately) gained back, I have to stay off the soda, as it leads to me overeating, and overeating bad (yet tasty) things. I’m down 10 pounds during these 73 days, and my pants definitely fit better. My goal is to stay soda-free, at the very least until I reach my goal of losing 32.5 pounds. So far, so good.
