There are 27 lighthouses in Maryland, and since 2001 I’ve paddled my sea kayak to every one of them. A few are really easy to kayak to, as they’re near launch sites and/or are not too far from shore. Some are much harder to get to, as they’re located miles from shore, where wind and waves can get pretty rough. I’ve had friends take pictures of me at every one of the 27!

How I did it: Lots of planning, and lots of paddling. I had to read a lot of charts to find the best courses to follow, then use the tide tables and weather sites to pick the best days and times to do all the trips. Read how I did it…
I’m a misplaced westerner (grew up more in CA than anywhere else) who visited the family house on Vashon Island in Puget Sound as a kid, and my wife is from St. Louis; we’ve both been in Maryland for a while now. She’d never visited the Pacific Northwest until we did a brief vacation in Seattle and Vancouver a few years ago. We’ve set our sights on moving there within the next few years! The picture is us around 6,000’ up Mt. Rainier.
Most of the furniture we’ve collected for our current house (a 1939 Cape Cod) is Arts and Crafts, and it would be great to have the right house to fit our stuff!
