This ties in closely with my interest in building a car or an airplane. Just the idea that I could take raw materials and make something useful out of them turns me on. I sat and watched a friend of mine cut cloth and make a shirt one night and it was just too cool! I mean, you have to have clothes. Imagine being able to make them yourself. And, there are so many other things that can be made if you can really sew. My grandmother used to make stuffed animals and all kinds of household stuff. I had a friend in the Army who sewed up parachutes and rigging; he could do all kinds of useful stuff like customizing backpacks (and, man! could he patch a pair of jeans). I ran across somebody else in the past who made a living sewing – he and his wife made seat cushions and various covers for sailboats. This is just one of those things I wish I had learned much earlier in life. No time like the present to get started.

How I did it: I started when I was just a little kid, worked hard at it in high school, pretty much gave it up in college, and then just walked into it while working overseas. It was really just a matter of being in the right place at the right time and being willing to talk to people. Read how I did it…
I’ve always dreamed of doing this – taking a bunch of parts and putting them together to create a car or an aircraft or even a hovercraft. Yeah, I slapped lawn mower wheels and boards together when I was a kid to make go-carts, but I haven’t built a REAL vehicle yet. I worked for a racing fabricator in high school and I was constantly amazed at how my boss could take sheets of metal and form them into Indy cars. I don’t even care if it’s a kit car or a kit plane (since I know those “kits” involve a LOT more fabrication and fitting of parts than the sellers want you to know about). I’d probably be content to put together a basic kit car. But, I’d really feel like I’d done something if I built an aircraft (helicopter or airplane – I lean toward seaplane) and actually flew it. All it takes is money. . .
I’m not sure I really want to be a lawyer. I did at one time – planned to save the environment from destruction as an environmental attorney or something. One semester into 1L and I realized environmental attorneys don’t save the environment – they protect the people who may be destroying it. Anyway, I’m over that. I passed 1L but the school and I agreed that I should take a year off before 2L. That has extended to about 20 years now which means I’d be starting all over. I definitely have more realistic goals for a law degree, if I ever finish. I’d be a killer divorce and family law advocate for men. But, I’ll probably never go back to an actual school; I’d only do it through an on-line program where my interaction with 19-year old cut-throat over-achiever yuppies would be minimal. I’d never want the stress and corporate BS of working for a firm – after age 19, “they” only seem to get worse. I wouldn’t need sheepskin from some prestigious school anyway; at most, I’d hang out a shingle at the home office and let things take their course. I think my main motivation is just the possibility that I could generate a living from self-employment without putting in but maybe 30 hours a week.
