We have a bike workshop in my town that’s just a non-profit with the goal of teaching people to overhaul, repair, and ride bikes. I LOVE it. I’d always go on ladies’ night because it was easier to have my kid there then, not so crowded. It took a long time, but I’m now the proud new owner of a ‘75 Schwinn Collegiate 5-speed I like to call Belinda. :-D

How I did it: Took my time, referred to my pattern and tutorials regularly, and didn't expect perfection when I was done. :-) I found a very simple pattern from ravelry.com, looked at plenty of tutorials about the stitches and such, and just kept at it. Worked on other projects to break up the monotony and mental strain of learning, but didn't let myself get TOO sidetracked, focused on how exciting it would be to start my next project. How I did it: I got on their website and asked for a prospectus. Didn't really know what most of it meant, but I didn't get hung up on that--the concept of a mutual fund makes it pretty safe, and I'm a LONG term investor, as I was only 24 when I started it. I turned in their application for one with a check for like $200,and they got it going. One of the reasons I liked that company was that they'd let me start it with less than $1K, which … Read how I did it…
I hadn’t been ready to settle down until my daughter was born. That settled me down pretty quickly. ;-) Before that, I wanted to be in love, sure, but not to do any of the work that it takes to make it last. At that point, it was a matter of being true to myself, not compromising on the stuff that really matters, screening people BEFORE developing emotional attachments so I don’t cloud my brain with lust, and not getting my hopes up too early after meeting someone.
Well, a friend of mine from the vegetarian community group I’m in died unexpectedly last week. In his will (smart man, to just have that lying around in case something like this happened) he outlined that memorial gifts could be made to PETA, but a more “joyful and meaningful” memorial would be to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle. I’m already vegetarian, but he was vegan, so I figured this was a very good time to do my vegan week, in memory of Ron.
I’m on day 2. I’m kinda making a big deal about it, it just feels kinda cumbersome. I mean, I’m feeding the cheese and eggs in the fridge to my daughter, because she’s still just vegetarian (she’s 2, I’m not going to take away any of the foods she’ll actually eat!) If it weren’t for Newman-O’s and Soy Dream, I think I’d be off the wagon already. :P But a lot of the meals I already made were vegan. Mainly, it’s those weird ingredients like casein that are hard to remember and look for in prepared foods. And I’ve pretty much committed to not eating fast food at all this week, because ingredient lists are so hard to come by. Maybe I’ll go out for Thai with a friend at the end of the week, ‘cause I know I can get that vegan. :-)
