I helped out with Locks of Love at my campus. My hair grows insanely slow, so I only donated 4”—but it all helps Locks of Love since it goes back to what they do. If you donate 10” or more, it goes straight to making a wig, and if you donate less than that, Locks of Love sells the hair to wig companies that can make wigs using the shorter hair.
A good friend started the Locks of Love event at my college. We had LoL the weekend of April Fool’s Day. So we promoted the idea of getting crazy haircuts for the occasion and having people pay to see their friends follow through with the cuts. We made sponsor/donation sheets for it—it was great.
There was a random, cool outcome to it all as well. My friend who had helped get LoL going was also an RA. So at one of the large dorm meetings, she encouraged freshmen to do a crazy haircut, and they in turn challenged her to buzz her head. They got so many people to sponsor her to go through with it, creating a sum donation in the hundreds, that she decided to seriously consider it since it’d raise so much money (and she’s an awesome person). Well she went through with it and in the end raised $2000 (she’s amazing). It was like in V for Vendetta (haha, and the timing synched up with the movie also), but it kicks ass. I look up to her for that.
So if you’re going to start an LoL event, I encourage you to add the crazy haircut part to it because it makes it that much more fun and interesting. Have fun and good luck! :)
