Due to a vacation kerfluffle, I found myself stuck in Cave City, Kentucky. It’s beautiful! There are many privately owned caves around here and one set of caves operated by the National Parks system. We took the “New Entrance” tour at Mammoth Cave National Park ($12) and the commercial tour at Diamond Caverns ($16).
These limestone caves are part of the largest system in the world. Much of it isn’t particularly exciting – just big blocks and sheets of limestone – but some parts of the caves have the beautiful formations everyone looks forward to. They’re breathtaking. We particularly enjoyed Diamond Caverns, which was completely full of eye-popping formations (and was much less busy).
It’s a very nice way to spend a hot summer day or a cold winter evening, since temperatures in the cave run in the 50s-60s all year ‘round.
I’m very overweight and out of shape, but in otherwise good health—the tours I went on were not too strenuous or uncomfortable.
