(DVD, released 2006)
I own this movie, and have watched it at least six times, because it is SO GOOD. I kind of liken Stranger Than Fiction to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in the same way that I liken Coldplay to Radiohead: they’re similar, but one is definitely more easily consumed by the general public. However, unlike Coldplay, I actually like Stranger Than Fiction. Quite a bit. Will Ferell is note-perfect, and the rest of the cast is just stellar. Seriously: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emma Thompson, Dustin Hoffman, Tony Hale, even Queen Latifah. All excellent. It combines an offbeat story with a very particular and relevant style, and I just love the way it unfolds. Plus, it’s a movie that my wife and I can both enjoy equally: that’s a beautiful rarity.

(DVD, released 2003)
Just like the two that came before it, IA3 was another very good movie, with excellent performances (I am REALLY digging Tony Leung Chiu Wai and Andy Lau). And it twists things up a little bit: while the first movie was a fairly straight-ahead action movie, and the second was a gangster film a la The Godfather, this third movie has got the tension and style of a psychological thriller. However, the non-linear storytelling got rather confusing, and I wasn’t sure what was happening some of the time. And I’m usually good with the non-linear narratives. It might suffer in comparison to the first two Infernal Affairs movies, but it was still good and worthy to stand alongside them.
