improve my spelling
Tricks to remembering . . . 2 years ago

My mum enunciates “San Ber-NAR-dino” when speaking about San Bernardino, CA. Locals usually say “San Ber-nuh-dino.” OVER pronouncing words as they’re spelled can help with spelling.

I now know that “ridicule” is the root of the word “ridiculous.’ That helps me spell both words correctly.

Anyone have tricks for knowing when to spell a word ending in “el” (e.g. label) vs. “le” (e.g. bible, table). What rule can help me know when to use which?

eliminate TV
Pretty much done it! 2 years ago

A couple years ago, my favorite shows went off the air (Frasier and Friends). After that, I really wanted not to get hooked on anything new. I just didn’t want to schedule my life around TV anymore. I’ve actually done a pretty good job. I watch about 2-4 hours of TV a week, mostly local news and occasionally the Daily Show. I’ve avoided getting hooked on new shows (I’ve never seen Idol, Desparate Housewives, Dancing w/ the Stars, etc.) I admit, I really like Lost, but the commercials drive me nuts. I wait until the end of the season and then rent the whole thing from the video store and have a little marathon. I’m looking forward to seeing the entire third season of Lost sometime late this summer. In the meantime, I’ve avoided watching who knows how many hours of commercials and new shows that I really doh’t miss at all.

Cutting out or cutting back on TV is WORTH DOING!!

get a passport
Did it! 2 years ago

I applied for my US passport back in Jan ‘07. It took all of 10 minutes at the post office. Be sure to read the state department web site before you go to make sure you have everything they want before wasting your time in line. I sure hope it arrives soon! I’m going to Ontario, Canada in May to visit my Gram for her 90th birthday. My mum will be there too, so I’m looking forward to seeing them both.

Once I get my US passport (and the return of my birth certificate), I will then apply for my Canadian passport (I’m a dual citizen). Considering how unfavorably Americans are viewed in some places, I’d prefer to travel on a Canadian passport in those places. After all, who doesn’t like Canadians?
