So what if you don’t get a raise from getting your PhD? Did you really think your boss would recognize that you probably have more formal education than he or she does? Of course not… That being said, this goal is totally worth it in the sense that you will forever have options available to you that few have, particularly for those non-academic types. (Yes, I said non-academic!) Being an expert in what you do and having a PhD will ultimately allow you to teach courses at your leisure now or once you settle down in the more golden years of life. You have the advantage over the academic folks in that you have years of actual experience and can even teach online. I am doing so, while working during the day, and have dual income. All this for devoting 4 years of your life to study, reading and writing. If you can get your company to pay for it – all the better.
