I’m by no means “done”, but this past year I definitely saw a breakthrough where I recognized that my work had exponentially improved in quality and speed of development from when I was in college.
I think the biggest factor in this improvement was being unafraid to fail, and finding frameworks and development environments that feel intuitive to you. For me, ASP.NET MVC is an intuitive framework that behaves with what feels like a path of least resistance for me: working with it helped me create much faster without fighting the tool as much. Seek out the tools that help you to get work done, and use them!

We created an indie game studio and published a game called Gravitronix on WiiWare. It was a great experience! We didn’t see a single red cent from the venture, but it was fun to create. My only regret was that we weren’t able to give it all of the polish that might have won it better reviews or perhaps enough people downloading it to hit those minimum sales thresholds. Oh well, it was still fun!

If you’re in a bad job situation, don’t be afraid to look around! I moved on and got more money, healthcare, and I was able to finally work on a team of peers from whom I was able to learn a great deal.
