I started eating more healthy in December of last year. I dropped about 7 pounds, and then made the choice to invest about $200 in several meetings with a nutritionist. This was a very hard thing for me to do because I’m a cheapskate…but it was worth every penny.
Now I’m down a total of about 25 pounds. I weigh about what I did in college. I work out periodically, but nothing extreme. Mostly I just feel better.
And best of all…I used to be beseiged by daily migraines. Since I started working with the nutritionist in January I’ve only had one migraine. I used to count the days until my insurance would cover another round of prescription pills. Now, I can’t even remember that last time I took one.
Here’s what worked for me:
- no more eating 2 or 3 big meals a day. Switched to five or six small ones.
- don’t go carb-free, but go for less carbs. Even a larger lunch meal should have less than 35 grams of rice/grain/bread-related carbs
- go for wheat bread and brown rice instead of white
- eat whole foods! Apples, pears, carrots, celery, etc.
- two or three meals a day are snack-sized. 5-7 cashews with 5 triscuits; 1 string cheese + baby carrots; 1/2 C yogurt + a handful of trail mix, etc.
– cut way down on dinner portions. 4 oz of meat is about right…I bought a really inexpensive food scale to measure until I got the hang of it
- measure, measure, measure your portions until you can largely tell by looking at something whether it’s too big a portion
I hardly ever feel hungry, I wear clothing sizes I haven’t worn in 10 years, and I don’t have migraines. All in all, pretty darn good.
