How I did it: I actually was heavily influenced by a leadership seminar I went to last fall. The man who led it heavily stressed a "be here now" concept. This meant focus on what was being done now, and not on your future plans or your cell phone or anything. He’s in the Army now, but we’ve been keeping in contact: Writing, phone calls, and the occasional facebook/myspace message.
When I asked him about a relationship, he told me he loves me and he would like that, but it is too hard for him to be a relationship in his position.
