I’m one of those people who start diets or exercise regimes or other life-modifying resolutions on a Monday. If I slip up, it’s ALL ruined and I’ll need to start again… the following Monday. The type of person who slips-up on a diet by having one chocolate and instead of saying ‘ok, so I had ONE chocolate, it’s not ideal but it’s no biggie.’ Nope, I’ll scoff the whole box and start again properly, perfectly… the following Monday.
I stumbled upon some words of wisdom to help me out of this cycle:
‘Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good’ (Voltaire).
i.e. it’s better to do SOMETHING imperfectly than NOTHING perfectly.
Words to live by.

6 years ago I ran a 20k with no training, for charity. I was younger and fitter (though not fit). To get round without walking wasn’t in my gameplan. I surprised myself… not only did I not stop nor walk once (including the long hill at 18k) but I sprinted at the end. The time wasn’t impressive, but I felt on such a high… even 3 toenails and a tube of Deep Heat later. I wanted to run a marathon.
I stopped running.
Time to start again. There’s the same annual 20k coming up again on May 31. I’ve left it a bit late to start training, but let’s see what I can manage…

Somewhere recently I read that a good trick is to place a pencil/pen horizontally between your teeth which puts the mouth into a smile. I’m doing this whilst typing… but after too long it causes dribbling!
Pen-in-teeth is not a good look for walking down the street, but in the office working at my computer, it may work. Let’s see…
