There’s only so much you can hide under long sleeves. I got so sick of my friends telling me to stop doing it, like I immediately could or something.
I had to work for a few days as a waitress and to my horror the shirt I had to wear had short sleeves. I got so many questions about ‘who’s been scratching you’ and ‘how did you do that?’, I probably lost track of all the stories I made up. It made me so sad to see people looking at me like I was a freak.
Obviously, my mum found out around this time. She didn’t tell me to stop, because she knew my sister had done it too, she just told me to be careful. That made me sadder still.
In the end, to be honest, the important task is to learn to stop doing it.

In school I went on an exchange for four weeks to Mexico City (from the UK). It was the most amazing experience of my life, It was also the biggest culture shock of my life! I made some great friends. I think staying with a Mexican family is the best way to see Mexico as you’re more like an insider than a tourist looking in at a foreign culture.
When I was seven years old I decided I wanted to play the hammer dulcimer. In my experience, most people I’ve met think it’s strange and unusual instrument, but it feels so natural to me now. I also found that if you want to attract any kind of attention, you just start playing a hammered dulcimer, and most of the general public will stop still and listen, they are so fascinated. Makes me feel amazing every time. Now here I am, eighteen years old, and about to go off to college to study for a contemporary music degree. So there you go.
