Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Other Ways to Skin This Cat

So after I worked on addressing the medical drivers for this issue, I wanted to work on holistic options to help with it as well. I did some research and found two things on Amazon (of all places). One is a blue light that cycles on and off. You are to match your breathing to the light cycle as you go to sleep. Amazingly, I was able to go to sleep prior to the end of the 7-minute cycle on the first night. After a few months, I am now able to turn off the light and go to sleep in the dark in just a few minutes. This is something that I haven’t done in years. Needless to say, I am impressed and happy with the results.

The other item I bought was an alarm clock which mimics the rising sun. It starts to slowly turn on 30 minutes before the alarm time and then it plays bird sounds instead of a radio or buzzer alarm. I still hit the snooze button but I do find that I’m a little less irritable about waking up. I am a night owl, so it is tough for me to go to bed before 11:30pm. If I could just go to bed by 10pm, then I think getting up by 6am or 6:30am would be no problem. This is the next thing I am working on.

So, to sum up, I am able to get to sleep faster, stay asleep longer, and wake up in a better state. Now if I could just get myself to go to sleep a bit earlier, I think this will continue to get better. I am definitely glad that I have made this a focus to improve my life.

I Signed Up for a Class

So I had a lot of trouble with this one in the past due to my asthma issues. It started to get a lot worse and I was huffing off my inhaler way too often. Once I had had enough, I went to the Dr. and got a better treatment plan. This has made a world of difference so far.

Since I now seem to be doing better on this, I signed up for a “get your fat rear end off the couch” 5K class. The form asked my current fitness level, from 1 (low) to 10 (triathlete). I put down “-4”. The class costs $125, I bought new sneakers for $40, and new running/yoga pants for $30. I’m fairly invested here and really just want to see this through. I would love it if I could keep this up and have a more healthful lifestyle. Losing weight would be a great side-benefit. I’m not sure that would happen, but it would be nice if it did. Keep ya posted!

Got a Job!

I did get a good job on 2/2/2011 in my field for a major retailer. I’m grateful for the company to have taken a chance on me. Been more than a year now and I’m still going strong. We’ll see what happens next.
