I’m interested in collecting all the original Japanese entries in the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy series, along with any console-based remakes. I may or may not get the Japanese versions of PS/PS2 games where I already own the North American version, but I definitely want all the cartridge-based games. I’m not interested in any of the spinoff games or Final Fantasy XI, which is online-only.

Here’s my collection so far:

Famicom:
Dragon Quest 1-4 (complete)
Final Fantasy 1-3 (complete)

Super Famicom:
Dragon Quest 3, 5, 6 (missing 1.2 remake combo cart)
Final Fantasy 5, 6 (bought 4 but it was defective, needs replacement)

PlayStation:
Dragon Quest 4 (missing 7)
No Final Fantasies (missing 7, 8, 9)
Total: 1/5

PlayStation 2:
Dragon Quest 5, 8 (complete)
No Final Fantasies (missing 10, 10-2, 12)

Also I have the DQ3 Gameboy Color remake, FF3 Nintendo DS remake, FF 4,5,6,8,9 for PS, and FF 10,10-2 for PS2 all in English.

Now that I own most of the original releases of each game in the main (numbered) series, I want to beat each game in its original release, whether in Japanese or in English. Here are the versions I am targeting:

- I own most of these already. I still FF7 and FF12, and my copy of FF4 needs replacing because corrosion to the circuit board caused it to be unable to save.
- I haven’t decided which version of FF12 to buy yet, but I’m open to both English or Japanese.
- As for FF11, I know it can’t be “beat” like the offline games, but I want to play it relatively thoroughly and beat all the expansion missions. I hear there’s some near-impossible boss that takes over 24 hours to kill. I dispense myself of the requirement of killing it.
- In order to consider a game finished, I must not only see the credits roll, but also defeat any optional bosses.
-So far the only games in the series I finished are FF1 and FF2 on the GBA Dawn of Souls remake, and the FF3 Nintendo DS remake. So that means a grand total of zero of these goals have been achieved so far.
-This is a long-term goal. I don’t expect to finish any time soon.

My goal here is to finish all the games in the Dragon Quest series, excluding spinoffs, in their original Japanese versions, and also to finish all the console-based remakes of those games. My targets include:

- I made one exception to the Japanese rule for DQ7 because I already own it in English and it’s such a long game that I don’t think I’d play through it enough to merit buying a second copy. It’s also more expensive than most of the others.
- In order to consider a game finished, I must not only see the credits roll, but also go through any bonus dungeons and defeat any bonus bosses.
- I already own all of these except for DQI.II for SFC and of course DQ9 which hasn’t been released yet.
- So far the only game on this list I have completed is Dragon Quest V for Super Famicom. I did beat the first four in English, but I want to go back and play them again in Japanese.
