I was buying a six pack of beer one evening .. as I walked out of the store a black man of African descent approached me with a box. He wanted donations and he was wearing a red vest with a white cross. I gave approx 0.50€ to the guy. He thanked me and gave me one of the most sincere and warm smiles I’ve ever seen
It didn’t do anything for me! I didn’t see any tangible results .. there were people starving in the world despite me giving away money. Instead of feeling pompously good about myself I just lost 0.50 €. From now on I’ll just laugh heartily when I hear about “humanitarian catastrophes” in Darfur and other places full of people whose lives are meaningless to me.
When I buy a meal from McDonald’s I know that for the cost of a BigMac I could save the lives of many little African children who are dying of easily treatable diseases just because they’re too poor to buy medicine. It makes me smile inside.
