In general I think they are terrible ideas and only lead to trouble and hurt feelings. However I think that at least attempting one is worthwhile under the right circumstances (ie I am with someone I want to be with but don’t really want to have the norms of a relationship…in case it isn’t obvious I am thinking of a specific individual). So I am young, living in a city that is known for sexual liberation, why not?

It is a relatively painless process (a little bit of blood) and all it does is put you on the list. If things change and you are unable (or decide not to) you can anonymously decline. It is something so simple and easy and is capable of saving the life of someone. It is especially important since bone marrow cancer is just as deadly today as it was in the past. With stem cell research getting thrown so many obstacles it is the most effective method a lot of patients have. If you don’t know where to start please let me know and I will try to help you find a center near you. If you are white it might (but not always) cost around $60 but almost all metropolitan areas have places where non-whites can get typed for free.
I have donated many times, both at blood drives and for tests, and it is definitely not bad. Most people barely feel it and are done before they know it. However even those of us who have had a bad experience (I have hard to find veins and sometimes get pricked multiple times; twice went through) it is important to try again. If you are nervous ask for someone who is more experienced while in the screening process. There are a lot of talented folks and if you make sure to let your worries be known I have had a lot of positive responses. Good luck!!
