Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

Remember how 43T changed my life
Alchemy

I have been on 43 Things for 9 years now and in that time, I’ve achieved so much. I’ve started a business, moved to the country, travelled the world, changed career, written three books, learned to drive…the list goes on. And although a lot of this has been down to personal drive, I can honestly say that I wouldn’t have done half of it without 43 Things. It’s offered a place to store my hopes and dreams; a place where I’ve been able to turn half-baked wishes into reality.

I haven’t been the chattiest person online, but I’ve always appreciated the support that has been freely given by this community. I am going to miss you all so much and I wish you the best of luck in the future. Thanks for everything.

August Review

OK – my last ever round-up on 43T. Very sad, but at least it’s ending on a positive note.

Writing

  • Secure a lucrative publishing deal with a great publisher who is enthusiastic, supportive and willing to invest in my long-term career – I’m optimistic about this goal after meeting with my agent last week. We were so close on the last one and this novel is better.
  • Re-write current novel to an excellent standard by May 2014 – the book needs more work, but I have no problem with this. It needs to be as good as it can be, Revision notes should be coming through tonight.
  • Explore ideas for the next book by reading at least 7 non-fiction titles & 7 fiction titles – More than 75% of the way through this goal. I will easily achieve this.
  • Continue to learn about the craft and widen contacts via editorial work, conferences and workshops – booking conference for November.
  • Blog on a weekly basis – on hold.

Health & Exercise

  • Continue to nurture the secret goal positively, healthily & successfully – project coming along nicely.
  • Exercise 5 x per week (for 30 minutes)- yes.
  • Cook healthy, natural meals from scratch – yes.
  • Master 5 soups – no soups this month.
  • One hike per month with friends – walked around the local reservoir.
  • Climb 5 Wainwrights – tbc.

Work

  • Earn a good wage as a full-time fiction writer – it will be done!

Financial

  • Live off one wage by budgeting and spending wisely – not doing too badly here.
  • Plan meals and shop more carefully to save money on food/drink – improving.
  • Complete surveys in return for vouchers – not enough time.
  • Enter competitions – sporadically.
  • Sell at second-hand fairs – planning another eBay splurge in August.
  • Save emergency fund – this is growing.

Travel

  • Visit 2 x literary festivals – will visit one this year.
  • See family & friends in London – done.
  • Take at least one non-UK holiday – unlikely.

Give

  • Donate blood – will book in on the next date.
  • Continue with the editorial work on the blog (volunteering) – still doing this, but will reduce commitment from October onwards.
  • Review and rate books online (Goodreads & Amazon)- making time in August.

Writing

  • Secure a lucrative publishing deal with a great publisher who is enthusiastic, supportive and willing to invest in my long-term career – revising now and hoping that this might be the one.

  • Blog on a weekly basis – still on hold.

  • Pack
  • L present + card
  • Revisions

April Review

Writing

  • Secure a lucrative publishing deal with a great publisher who is enthusiastic, supportive and willing to invest in my long-term career – fingers crossed that my novel will be good enough to give this another shot in June.
  • Re-write current novel to an excellent standard by May 2014 – sent the manuscript to my agent, a fellow writer and crit group in mid-April. So far, the feedback has been positive, but still waiting for my agent to respond.
  • Explore ideas for the next book by reading at least 7 non-fiction titles & 7 fiction titles – no progress.
  • Continue to learn about the craft and widen contacts via editorial work, conferences and workshops – considering which class to attend.
  • Blog on a weekly basis – no time to do this right now.

Health & Exercise

  • Continue to nurture the secret goal positively, healthily & successfully – trying my hardest!
  • Exercise 5 x per week (for 30 minutes)- this still involves walking only. I’d like to introduce swimming.
  • Cook healthy, natural meals from scratch – definitely healthy/home-cooked, but unadventurous.
  • Master 5 soups – the minestrone was delicious!
  • One hike per month with friends – completed one in April.
  • Climb 5 Wainwrights – tbc.

Work

  • Earn a good wage as a full-time fiction writer – still a top priority.

Financial

  • Live off one wage by budgeting and spending wisely – not as important now that I’ve decided to stay at work.
  • Plan meals and shop more carefully to save money on food/drink – some weeks better than others.
  • Complete surveys in return for vouchers – not enough time.
  • Enter competitions – yes.
  • Sell at second-hand fairs – pricing up for the May fair.
  • Save emergency fund – done, but want to add to this.

Travel

  • Visit 2 x literary festivals (ideally Hay & Edinburgh)- need to find an alternative to Hay.
  • See family & friends in London – must book in diary.
  • Take at least one non-UK holiday – considering Dubrovnik for October.

Give

  • Donate blood – will book in on the next date.
  • Continue with the editorial work on the blog (volunteering)- have increased my involvement.
  • Review and rate books online (Goodreads & Amazon)- rating books, need to add reviews.

May is about saving, travelling and refining. Hard work required!

Revise the current book until it's utterly compelling (read all 3 entries…)
One down, one to go

I received a great crit from a fellow writer last week. Extremely positive on the whole with suggestions for minor tweaks. I can make most of the changes fairly easily.

My agent still hasn’t read the manuscript so I’m giving him another fortnight before chasing again. In the meantime I’m going to make some amendments right now and hope that he doesn’t ask for substantial revisions.
