March Review

Writing

  • Secure a lucrative publishing deal with a great publisher who is enthusiastic, supportive and willing to invest in my long-term career – hoping to give this another shot in May.
  • Re-write current novel to an excellent standard by May 2014 – I think I’ll make this deadline. I’ve finished my line edits, but need to do a little more work on the final act. Aiming to send the manuscript to my agent in early April for feedback.
  • Explore ideas for the next book by reading at least 7 non-fiction titles & 7 fiction titles – I’ve easily exceeded the fiction total. Need to work on the NF.
  • Continue to learn about the craft and widen contacts via editorial work, conferences and workshops – still not a priority.
  • Blog on a weekly basis – shelved indefinitely.

Health & Exercise

  • Continue to nurture the secret goal positively, healthily & successfully – doing my best here.
  • Exercise 5 x per week (for 30 minutes)- mostly achieving this goal. Could do with introduced a session of vigorous exercise.
  • Cook healthy, natural meals from scratch – pleased with this.
  • Master 5 soups – haven’t felt like cooking due to stomach bug, but very keen to make the minestrone in April.
  • One hike per month with friends – Completed one in March.
  • Climb 5 Wainwrights – tbc.

Work

  • Earn a good wage as a full-time fiction writer – A long-term aim.

Financial

  • Live off one wage by budgeting and spending wisely – not as tight as I should be here. Find this difficult when very busy.
  • Plan meals and shop more carefully to save money on food/drink – mostly sticking to this, with the odd blip.
  • Complete surveys in return for vouchers – still to be done.
  • Enter competitions – yes.
  • Sell at second-hand fairs – have registered for a May fair.
  • Save emergency fund – done, but want to add to this.

Travel

  • Visit 2 x literary festivals (ideally Hay & Edinburgh)- still working on this one.
  • See family & friends in London – tbc.
  • Take at least one non-UK holiday – thinking of travelling abroad in October 14.

Give

  • Donate blood – missed yet another session due to work. Must try harder.
  • Continue with the editorial work on the blog (volunteering)- getting more involved in May.
  • Review and rate books online (Goodreads & Amazon)- yes

February Review

Writing

  • Secure a lucrative publishing deal with a great publisher who is enthusiastic, supportive and willing to invest in my long-term career – I think it may be over for the novel that’s out there right now, but I’m hoping that my new one will be ready to sub this Spring. Fingers crossed.
  • Re-write current novel to an excellent standard by May 2014 – pretty much on track. Now revising the third act and expect to finish this pass by mid-March. Off to a couple of readers after this.
  • Explore ideas for the next book by reading at least 7 non-fiction titles & 7 fiction titles – I’ve read 5 fiction titles, but no move on the NF recently.
  • Continue to learn about the craft and widen contacts via editorial work, conferences and workshops – not a priority at the moment.
  • Blog on a weekly basis – the fiction writing has taken all my time up recently. I do want to get back to this, but it’s not feasible right now.

Health & Exercise

  • Continue to nurture the secret goal positively, healthily & successfully – yes, but ups and downs to be dealt with.
  • Exercise 5 x per week (for 30 minutes)- easily achieving this target.
  • Cook healthy, natural meals from scratch – 90% of the time.
  • Master 5 soups – need to add a couple more recipes. Keen on the idea of minestrone.
  • One hike per month with friends – none in Feb. Will have to make up for this by doing two per month later in the year.
  • Climb 5 Wainwrights – tbc.

Work

  • Earn a good wage as a full-time fiction writer – I still have this as my number one goal for the future.

Financial

  • Live off one wage by budgeting and spending wisely – slipped a little in the last fortnight, but generally good. I’ve managed to save most of my wage.
  • Plan meals and shop more carefully to save money on food/drink – again, massive improvement.
  • Complete surveys in return for vouchers – still to be done.
  • Enter competitions – yes.
  • Sell at second-hand fairs – have bagged everything up for the April fair.
  • Save emergency fund – done, but want to add to this.

Travel

  • Visit 2 x literary festivals (ideally Hay & Edinburgh)- had to change Hay due to work so would like to find alternative
  • See family & friends in London – maybe April.
  • Take at least one non-UK holiday – looking at a couple of possibilities, but Copenhagen top of the list at the moment.

Give

  • Donate blood – didn’t work out in Feb so will try again.
  • Continue with the editorial work on the blog (volunteering)- hoping to increase input a little soon.
  • Review and rate books online (Goodreads & Amazon)- need to catch-up on a few.

Jan Review

Writing

  • Secure a lucrative publishing deal with a great publisher who is enthusiastic, supportive and willing to invest in my long-term career – spoke to agent a fortnight ago and he was still waiting for responses. TBC.
  • Re-write current novel to an excellent standard by May 2014 – a bit behind on the editing schedule. Hope to catch up in Feb.
  • Explore ideas for the next book by reading at least 7 non-fiction titles & 7 fiction titles – I’ve read 2 x NF books and 2 x fiction books. New ideas seeping in.
  • Continue to learn about the craft and widen contacts via editorial work, conferences and workshops – no plan as yet.
  • Blog on a weekly basis – this has fallen by the wayside. Monthly is a more realistic expectation.

Health & Exercise

  • Exercise 5 x per week (for 30 minutes)- walking to & from work (approx 40mins per day.

  • Climb 5 Wainwrights – tbc.

Work

  • Earn a good wage as a full-time fiction writer – this feels distant right now, but I’m determined to keep the faith.

Financial

  • Live off one wage by budgeting and spending wisely – we’ve tightened our belts considerably and are almost on track.

  • Enter competitions – occasionally.
  • Sell at second-hand fairs – preparing for a biggish one in April.
  • Save emergency fund – going fairly well.

Travel

Revise the current book until it's utterly compelling
Structural Edits

I’m working on the big stuff at the moment after receiving an editorial report. So far, I’m a third through. It’s taking a lot longer than I expected – mainly because I’m only writing for an hour max a day at the moment. Those hours will tot up eventually though.

Ideally I’d like to finish the major re-writes by the end of January, then print the whole manuscript out and mark up the minutiae with an aim to completing by February. After this, I’ll email it to a couple of trusted readers for feedback, and revise again into April when hopefully, it will be ready to send to my agent.

have a one word resolution for 2014
GRIT

I’m starting to realise that determination is possibly the most important thing that makes a difference between success and mediocrity. This year I won’t let doubt, envy or laziness get in my way. Time to get down to some serious work.
