Dear 43 Things Users,

10 years after introducing 43 Things to the world, we have decided we have met our last goal: completing the incredible experience that has been 43 Things. Please join us in giving one last cheer to all the folks who have shared their goals with the world, as well as all the people who have worked at The Robot Co-op to build this incredible website. We won a Webby Award, published a book, and brought happiness to a lot of people.

Starting today, 43 Things users can export their goals and entries from the site. Starting August 15, we will make the site “read only”. 43 Things users will still be able to view the site and export their content, but we won’t be taking any new content from users. We hope to leave the site up for folks to see and download their content until the end of the year. Ending on New Year’s Eve takes us full circle.

It has been a long ride (one of our original goals was to "build a company that lasts at least 2 years” - we beat that one!) While we wish the site could live on, it has suffered from a number of challenges - changes in how people use the site, the advertising industry, and how search engines view the site. We wish the outcome was different – but we’ve always been realistic about when our goals are met and when they aren't.

As of today, you will be able to download your goals and entries. See more about that on the FAQ page. Thanks for 10 great years of goal-setting and achieving.

June Review

Writing

  • Secure a lucrative publishing deal with a great publisher who is enthusiastic, supportive and willing to invest in my long-term career – trying to remain positive about this goal.
  • Re-write current novel to an excellent standard by May 2014 – subbed the revised version to my agent in mid June and waiting for feedback.
  • Explore ideas for the next book by reading at least 7 non-fiction titles & 7 fiction titles – reading my 4th NF book.
  • Continue to learn about the craft and widen contacts via editorial work, conferences and workshops – would like to book on a workshop soon.
  • Blog on a weekly basis – still on hold.

Health & Exercise

  • Continue to nurture the secret goal positively, healthily & successfully – requires patience and hardwork, but worth it.
  • Exercise 5 x per week (for 30 minutes)- yes.
  • Cook healthy, natural meals from scratch – still doing this.
  • Master 5 soups – no soups this month.
  • One hike per month with friends – visited a local monument with friends.
  • Climb 5 Wainwrights – tbc.

Work

  • Earn a good wage as a full-time fiction writer – this feels a long way off, but I’m not giving up.

Financial

  • Live off one wage by budgeting and spending wisely – fairly frugal in June.
  • Plan meals and shop more carefully to save money on food/drink – becoming aware of what works & what doesn’t.
  • Complete surveys in return for vouchers – not enough time.
  • Enter competitions – entered a travel comp recently.
  • Sell at second-hand fairs – may return to eBay.
  • Save emergency fund – latter half of year should result in more savings.

Travel

  • Visit 2 x literary festivals (ideally Hay & Edinburgh)- possibly not going to happen due to logistics.
  • See family & friends in London – probably August.
  • Take at least one non-UK holiday – depends on funds.

Give

  • Donate blood – will book in on the next date.
  • Continue with the editorial work on the blog (volunteering)- back on track, but struggling with free time.
  • Review and rate books online (Goodreads & Amazon)- not enough time to factor this in right now.

May Review

Writing

  • Secure a lucrative publishing deal with a great publisher who is enthusiastic, supportive and willing to invest in my long-term career – revising now and hoping that this might be the one.
  • Re-write current novel to an excellent standard by May 2014 – my agent loved the book, but had a few requests for largish revisions. Currently working on these with a view to completing them by mid-June.
  • Explore ideas for the next book by reading at least 7 non-fiction titles & 7 fiction titles – read my 2nd NF book of the year.
  • Continue to learn about the craft and widen contacts via editorial work, conferences and workshops – started reading a book on craft this month.
  • Blog on a weekly basis – still on hold.

Health & Exercise

  • Continue to nurture the secret goal positively, healthily & successfully – doing OK here.
  • Exercise 5 x per week (for 30 minutes)- the walking is now habit. Still haven’t decided on the other activity.
  • Cook healthy, natural meals from scratch – managing this fairly well. Started to include salmon on a weekly basis.
  • Master 5 soups – added pea & mint to the repetoire.
  • One hike per month with friends – completed a tiny hike in May.
  • Climb 5 Wainwrights – tbc.

Work

  • Earn a good wage as a full-time fiction writer – one day!

Financial

  • Live off one wage by budgeting and spending wisely – cutting down in June.
  • Plan meals and shop more carefully to save money on food/drink – back on track
  • Complete surveys in return for vouchers – not enough time.
  • Enter competitions – yes.
  • Sell at second-hand fairs – sold approx. 50% goods at fair.
  • Save emergency fund – done, but want to add to this.

Travel

  • Visit 2 x literary festivals (ideally Hay & Edinburgh)- thinking about a local festival for ease.
  • See family & friends in London – probably August.
  • Take at least one non-UK holiday – Dubrovnik still top of the list, depending on funds.

Give

  • Donate blood – will book in on the next date.
  • Continue with the editorial work on the blog (volunteering)- I’ve taken over the planning.
  • Review and rate books online (Goodreads & Amazon)- rating books, need to add reviews.

I’ve heard that 43T may be shut down next month so want to say a big thanks to everyone who has cheered me during the last nine years. I’m going to miss this site so much :(

April Review

Writing

  • Secure a lucrative publishing deal with a great publisher who is enthusiastic, supportive and willing to invest in my long-term career – fingers crossed that my novel will be good enough to give this another shot in June.
  • Re-write current novel to an excellent standard by May 2014 – sent the manuscript to my agent, a fellow writer and crit group in mid-April. So far, the feedback has been positive, but still waiting for my agent to respond.
  • Explore ideas for the next book by reading at least 7 non-fiction titles & 7 fiction titles – no progress.
  • Continue to learn about the craft and widen contacts via editorial work, conferences and workshops – considering which class to attend.
  • Blog on a weekly basis – no time to do this right now.

Health & Exercise

  • Continue to nurture the secret goal positively, healthily & successfully – trying my hardest!
  • Exercise 5 x per week (for 30 minutes)- this still involves walking only. I’d like to introduce swimming.
  • Cook healthy, natural meals from scratch – definitely healthy/home-cooked, but unadventurous.
  • Master 5 soups – the minestrone was delicious!
  • One hike per month with friends – completed one in April.
  • Climb 5 Wainwrights – tbc.

Work

  • Earn a good wage as a full-time fiction writer – still a top priority.

Financial

  • Live off one wage by budgeting and spending wisely – not as important now that I’ve decided to stay at work.
  • Plan meals and shop more carefully to save money on food/drink – some weeks better than others.
  • Complete surveys in return for vouchers – not enough time.
  • Enter competitions – yes.
  • Sell at second-hand fairs – pricing up for the May fair.
  • Save emergency fund – done, but want to add to this.

Travel

  • Visit 2 x literary festivals (ideally Hay & Edinburgh)- need to find an alternative to Hay.
  • See family & friends in London – must book in diary.
  • Take at least one non-UK holiday – considering Dubrovnik for October.

Give

  • Donate blood – will book in on the next date.
  • Continue with the editorial work on the blog (volunteering)- have increased my involvement.
  • Review and rate books online (Goodreads & Amazon)- rating books, need to add reviews.

May is about saving, travelling and refining. Hard work required!

Revise the current book until it's utterly compelling (read all 3 entries…)
One down, one to go

I received a great crit from a fellow writer last week. Extremely positive on the whole with suggestions for minor tweaks. I can make most of the changes fairly easily.

My agent still hasn’t read the manuscript so I’m giving him another fortnight before chasing again. In the meantime I’m going to make some amendments right now and hope that he doesn’t ask for substantial revisions.

Waiting...

I sent the manuscript off to my agent and a fellow writer last weekend. Both are extremely busy so I don’t know how long it will take them to read the novel and respond – I’m guessing 3-4 weeks. A tells me that this is much better than my last book, but I’m so close to the text that I can’t assess the quality any more. Excited and nervous!
