Half the time I am not even home and it is such a waste. People are generally good, why not let random people sleep on the couch? I do not really have anything in my house that can be stolen except an iPod speaker and furniture… I have been poking around on couchsurfing.com and have just not been able to commit to signing up and having random people in my house from the internet.

How I did it: When I got my condo in April in San Diego I had 3 plants... one about 3 feet tall, one about 1 foot tall, and one 6 inches tall. They all died little by little except the small one... those small ones are strong, they look Sooo dead and then you give it water and it just comes back to life and grows leaves again, the big ones just cant handle the chaos. How I did it: I grew a beard and kept it well trimmed until the day was right, then shaved it and was left with a great stache. I knew it was time to shave it off when I missed the bus (gave up my car, see "reduce your environmental footprint" on 43things) and ran to catch a cab, jumpped into the back a bit out of breath, and the driver just looked at me and the light turns green and he refused to drive! I was like come on man I have a flight to catch.… Read how I did it…
How I did it: My car got stolen Dec. 25th 2007 and I decided not to replace it. I was about to go out of town to Brazil so I had no need for one for three months and then while in Brazil I rode the bus, then continued to ride the bus upon my arrival back to San Diego. I do not miss it at all. Read how I did it…

I find it very hard to know what will truly reduce my footprint so for the time being I’ve stopped consuming everything but designer clothing and digital media. I started using the book store like my own private library and stopped drinking coffee. My car got stolen on Christmas and I decided not to get another one and now use a monthly bus pass walking when possible. I do not use any heat or AC – but sort of cheat by living places I do not need heat or AC and going to the southern hemisphere every winter to have another summer. I have been shopping around the outside edge of the grocery store buying fresh non-packaged goods, now I just need to figure out how to cook more than green peppers and onions with a chunk of cheese on the side.
This past year I was in a beach house far from anything and sitting in that house listening to music while a three day storm passed. As I listened to the music I realized that for most of my life I was hearing music but not listening. The sound was from the same headphones and the same iPod but I was really listening to every instrument and every word. For the rest of the summer I noticed quite a bit more around me than the music – like everything else in life.
