I’ve been working at this goal, but I’m finding that my old friends are “old” for a reason. I’m a big believer that relationships are fluid and people vacillate in and out of each others’ lives at different times for different reasons. And no disrespect to my old friends – because they are all wonderful, important people in my life and I will always cherish them… but I am discovering that attempting to go back and re-create bonds with people from my past shouldn’t be my main focus.
Instead, I am going to work at developing deeper connections with the people in my life right now. I’ve recently had some experiences that have brought me closer to some of my friends in a really profound way. And those are the type of relationships I thrive on. Instead of trying to recapture something from my past, I can learn from it and focus on the present. I have the chance to show the people in my life what they mean to me and I want to make the most of it!
This is becoming a fun goal. I’m trying to re-discover my town because I’ve been here too long and have kind of settled into a routine of going the same places with the same people and doing the same things… and I ultimately just end up feeling trapped. I’ve always looked at Albany as my “transitional” place… I grew up here, then left, then came back to finish out college… but the reality is that I will be here until I leave for the Peace Corps and I want to start spicing things up.
2008 accomplishments to date:
- day trip to Saratoga… walked all around town and found this awesome record store
- Scotia cinema… an adorable hole-in-the-wall theater that shows recent releases for $4
- The Crossings (which is not something new, but is probably my favorite place in this whole area)... led to the discovery of a cute hippie store that reminds me of New Paltz
Upcoming:
- tickets to the Comedy Works downtown
- day trip to Bennington
- day trip to Lake George
