Her book “Bird by Bird” got me through my dissertation; “Traveling Mercies” got me through early sobriety; “Operating Instructions” got me through my pregnancy and early parenthood; and “Plan B: Further Thoughts on Faith” and “Grace (Eventually)” are getting me through my 30s. So I want to thank her for all of these gifts, and for the phrase that something is so bad that “it makes Jesus want to drink gin out of the cat dish.”
I think it would be a huge relief to have to keep my mouth shut for a few days—maybe it would quiet my mind a bit, too.
