I think I’m pretty good at this. I live in BC so it’s a pretty encouraging place for it in general. Just a note (read: very long entry) to keep track of where I am:
1. Usually places have recycling set up but I can’t find it at my new apartment.. so I have bottles piling up in my house (I only drink bottled water ever since I got super sick from tap water like 2 years ago). I also have tons of paper from the last school semester.. gotta get on that haha.
2. I don’t drive. Most of the places I have to be are like 5-15 mins by bus but my bf does drive me places.. so I kinda cheat sometimes :p
3. The real reason that pushes me for this is because I have to pay for lighting. All my lightbulbs are energy saving and I don’t keep every light in the house on (that annoys me) but even if I don’t have to pay for it again someday I’ll take all my energy-saving lightbulbs with me and do it again. I do keep the heat on high though.. CAUSE IT’S FREEZING (ok, and I get cold really easily!)
4. My cleaning products are ok. Usually try and use vinegar for cleaning the kitchen. I use biodegradable soap for dishes. The bathroom is a bit different though.. when I clean the toilet I use chemicals but ew.. it’s a toilet.. my mum cleaned my shower drain with baking soda and vinegar and it worked wonders so I’ll keep using that now. As for actually showering.. my shower doesn’t work properly and pours full loads of water out of BOTH the tap and the showerhead :S I’m not sure what to do about this because the other shower head is way too short for me.. I take a lot of baths though and it’s better than showering when your shower uses twice as much water as necessary. Also, my shampoo is normal (I need it.. it’s the only stuff that keeps my hair from being dry) but I like to use Lush products, which are natural and natural soap. I also use regular soap, kinda mix it up. I’d use lush 24/7 but it’s pricy.
5. I do accept plastic bags if I forget my backpack or I’m doing to the drugstore or something and I meant to recycle all the ones I used up before but then I think my parents came over and threw them out :/ Whoops! I also use plastic bags for collecting my bottles and paper in to be recycled so they do come into to use somewhat.
6.I like to eat organic food over non-organic as I do believe it’s better for you than the other stuff and it also helps the environment so it’s good for two things! Yay.
7. I don’t do a lot of laundry.. maybe 2-3 loads (and I hang dry most of it) every 2 weeks. My clothes take a bit to get dirty and I re-use my towels because I’m drying CLEAN water off of myself and when I leave my towels to dry after I’ve used them they are like new again (I’ve heard things about towels smelling after this.. well mine don’t.. I must be doing something right! :p)
Hmm.. There is probably more but I will add them when I think of them. I think I do pretty good but there are some things I have to work on…
a) fixing the shower head (any ideas..?)
b) finding recycling.. maybe I’ll get some blue recycling boxes for the whole apartment and other people will use them, too.. unless they are there already and I’m just blind (kinda hoping for this one but I really can’t see where else they’d be).
c) using less plastic bags
d) unplug microwave when not using it.. not sure why I haven’t done this yet
e) learn to deal with not having the house boiling because I hate the cold
f) try to buy more locally grown foods (I did this pretty well before but now I moved and have to find a new place to go to)
