How I did it: i moved in with my in-laws for a year. the price we paid in rent and utilities is all we needed to save for a house!location is important too... if looking to buy in the ny area there are bungalows by the water that are cheaper and surprisingly lower in taxes... ny is probably the only state that has waterfront property that is worth far less than it should be.
