I’m no closer really to actually homesteading and getting a mortgage this year is looking unlikely. But I am making great strides in reducing waste. I’ve made this my first step I can do right now. It’s quite amazing how much waste one household can produce. I am now recycling everything I can. I have bins set up in the basement for metal, plastic, paper, cardboard etc and once a month they are getting taken to the recycling center. I’m currently looking into ways of composting leftover food as that seems to be contributing a lot to the waste. I can’t compost food scraps outside though because of the bears. So I’m looking at indoor options. Right now a nature mill composter is looking the best option. It’s expensive though so I can’t get one right away. I am kinda excited about it though (yeah I know, it’s sad when you get excited about compost!) as it will help towards the second step I want to take – growing some of my own food.

I've taken the first step

I’ve taken control of my finances. I’m no longer hiding from my financial situation. It was kind of scary to see the numbers in front of me. It doesn’t look good but at least now I know where I stand and what I have to do to get us out of debt. I am still setting up the budget. I found a great program, YNAB (you need a budget!) and it’s the easiest system I’ve seen. It sure beats my old spreadsheet that was a muddled mess!

To find a software implementation of GTD. Actually I’m glad I did. I have started using Thinking Rock and I’m impressed. I still have to work on making sure I do the weekly review though.
