How I did it: I stuck to my training and slightly increased my overall mileage base from my first marathon to peaking out at 60 mpw, not 55, and stayed consistently in the 50-60 mpw range the entire training cycle. Pfitz 18 55 worked great for me with the balance of difference types of runs, and getting out there five days a week. Read how I did it…

I ran a half marathon this weekend in 1:47:xx, was thrilled because I felt like I HAD to run it in 1:50 or less to even consider training for a marathon with a BQ in mind (my qualifying standard for my age/sex is 3:45:59 or less).
I know I have a LONG, LONG way to go….but this was a promising first step.
I am going to maintain present mileage, and start on the Pfitz 55/18 training plan in about another two months for my October marathon.
Woohoo!
I started with a plan to just average 8:20 miles for the whole race…then very early on, I decided that because the downhill/flat felt good at about an 8:00/mile, I ought to stick with that, push the pace, and run a bit more aggressively until I couldn’t anymore, because my legs were bound to be shot at the end whether I played it conservatively or aggressively.
This wound up being a good plan! :D I was working hard but not dying when I was coming down the canyon, then had a bit of a slump entering the highway until the last mile. I sucked it up, kept pushing and talking to myself, and focused on not losing more off my pace. Made the last turn for home and saw that I WAS on track to make my goal! Finished with a gun time of 1:49:XX, and a chip time of 1:47:xx. I was thrilled!
My daughter also placed in the 5-mile in her age group, so it was a good day had by all! Quads are quite sore today, but I really don’t feel awful.
YAY! Looking forward to coming back and running this race again next year.
