I moved here from VA in october and have been for a few months. Save up at least 5000 bucks before you move (4000 might be ok if you are moving to a cheaper area like Brooklyn). Have friends to show you around the city. DO NOT FIND A ROOMMATE/APPT THROUGH CRAIGSLIST OR THE VILLAGE VOICE. Girls, do not move in with a man placing an ad for “female roommates” unless you want to be harassed by a creep 24/7. Never try to get a room/job with someone who claims to be out of town at the moment when you are looking. Always meet them first before giving your information to them! Look for a job as soon as you get there by networking and going into the city… not just by internet searching. Job searching will be hard so find a way for temporary income as soon as you get there or find a friend who is willing to help you during the hiring process. Don’t let the city beat you down. When you are not looking for a job, go out and SEE THE CITY. This is NYC! There are plenty of things to do and places to see that will cost you little to nothing. Just get an unlimited Metro pass and the city is yours! Don’t expect it to be anything like it is on sitcoms! Make the city your own. Look for events and clubs that would suit you. Poetry readings, jogging groups, photography clubs. Anything! Don’t expect people to be mean. That is a false stereotype… everyone is just busy, not mean. You will find several nice people in the city… just be aware of the crazies! They are definitely here.

How I did it: As a resolution I picked 12 vices of mine and am giving each one up for a month… Facebook was the first… I simply posted a Status saying what I was doing and that I would not be reachable on Facebook for one month… I logged off.. and I didn’t log on again until the month was over…. some of the messages I had accumulated were quite interesting Read how I did it…

My final semester at Old dominion was great! I got all A’s and B’s and had the highest GPA of any semester in college. I wish I would have done this well in prior semesters.
I did pretty much all of my homework my last semester and studied frequently. The outcome was the best GPA out of every semester I took in college! I wish I was more dedicated throughout my four years!
