I was 40 before I took up the challenge so from experience I’d recommend this sport to those in their late teens. You need good flexibility and resilience to get to walk away from a landing. You descend at around 1 ft/sec per stone of body weight so as I weigh 13 stones with my parachute kit, that is 13 ft/sec, equivalent to jumping off a 3 metre (10 ft) platform. I broke both legs, both feet, both ankles and sustained spinal compression and concussion in 13 jumps, but I still get a huge thrill from it.

After my first jump, I had to be carried back to the packing shed. Then I got plastered twice in 24 hours. Once at the club bar and the following day at my local hospital A & E department. I’ve never walked away from a landing yet but when I did the training at the age of 13 on a test rig built by the Paras, I landed safely on each of 40 jumps from 90 ft., over 5 days. So if you are young and fit, GO FOR IT!

I work as a volunteer at the Severn Valley Railway, which was badly hit by flood damage on June 19th. 2007. Due to reopen Easter 2008. I’d love to have the opportunity to travel up-front on my favourite steam loco. I find the age of steam so romantic. Such raw power! http://www.svr.co.uk
