The good and the less-good 12 hours ago

Did some hiking over vacation. Despite being out of the habit, my knee gave me no real trouble. That’s good!

The shoulder is still vulnerable. It’s not bad most of the time, but if I ask too much of it at any point, it gets sore again. Then again, the set-point of “asking too much” seems to be increasing, the soreness is less severe, and I am learning more and more about how to combat it. Along with stretching, I’ve procured some solomon’s seal infused oil for external application and some ss tincture to take internally when the ligaments get upset.

learn Mandarin
I know it's silly 13 hours ago

to do another language goal when I’ve done very little with my Spanish goal. I do not hope to become fluent in Mandarin, or really even totally conversant.

I do, however, want to be able to have simple conversations. Both Cantonese and Mandarin are only going to become more important in the future. I think it’s a mark of respect to at least make a small effort, even if I can’t speak it well.

Update 13 hours ago

Still going well. I’ve now met with still-more people in the system, and have quite a few other meetings lined up. I seem to be making a good impression also! The librarian assistant let me know a few weeks ago that she had heard good things about me from some of the folks I’d met with (hurray!).

I’ve been encouraged by several people to apply for a job with the system when I graduate (which is SOON, gulp!). I could definitely work there for awhile, and am planning to apply. Top administration is in turmoil at the moment, but from what I hear it has been for some time now. And in my experience, that tends to be more the rule than the exception in government orgs., especially in economically-strapped places. Slightly dodgy admin sitch aside, everyone I’ve met so far has seemed to really like their job for the most part, and has struck me as quite lovely. That’s got to count for something.
