I used to live in Minnesota on the Canadian border in the boundary waters canoe area. During the summer, the lights can be seen literally every night. I have never been to Alaska, but have known many who have and they said the lights were no where near as good as when we saw them in Minnesota. There were several nights when the lights took up more than 180 degrees of the sky from left to right and you could literally look straight up and still see the lights directly above you. Simply amazing. Of course the lights come from the north, but for half of your 360 degree vision to be filled with the lights is just incredible. The best time seeing them is staring at the sky right before it starts. You just start to see the sky swirl and dance and before you know it nature is putting on a show. You can also see the lights in the winter, however the weather is nowhere near as nice and the lights are not as intense.
