I have a penchant for mail. I have, in particular, huge penchants for good letters and mail from far away. This satisfies the second quality profoundly.

One housemate has also joined, though he tends to get lamer postcards for the most part. I have hypothesized that this is because I have a three-paragraph profile, which gives people a clue about me (or at least that I like to write), and he has a link to his photography site and mentions that he likes napping. We are both quite enjoying it, though; a lot of “guess where THIS one came from?” conversations tend to happen. (The first one from Finland came shortly after a bunch of us had been listening to the Monty Python Finland song in the car, not-once. I burst out laughing as soon as I saw it, but was also thrilled.)

I’ve bought a bunch of tiny little binder clips, and strung up yarn from pushpins on my door, so I can hang them all. I think I have five solid lines of them now? It’s incredible. I have decided to start a little map as well, where I actually locate where people are sending me things from in a more specific way (the history map gets messy quickly, and can’t be zoomed). Secretly I am hoping to use it to further my pathetically weak interest in geography.

give blood again
Hooray for bloodsucking needles! 3 years ago

“My” college (at which I’m taking one class, but that counts, right?) had a blood drive yesterday, and earlier this week they extended it to today as well, which meant I had time because I didn’t have to rush off to work after class. I am not very good at seeking out blood-giving opportunities on my own (it never feels like “the right time” when I’m near one), so this seemed splendid.

The first/last time I gave blood, I was sixteen (I think) and it was Halloween (how apropos), and every time since then (barring the almost-healed cold sore) I’ve been turned down because my pulse was too high—still got to go through all the questioning and waiting and finger-pricking, but they’d stop me right at the end of all that. “It might be a heart issue in someone your age” is what they usually told me, after they’d told me to “just relax.” Just relax, my foot, jerkhole. So I haven’t tried in a couple years. Classical conditioning, anyone?

But now I’ve had my EKG (and all I have is Long QT, which won’t do anything to pulse unless it sends you into cardiac arrest), and so I know that’s not true, and I’ve also gotten back into running, so I know that the gap between my resting pulse and too-high should be nice and big (so I can still get a little wound up and have it be within range). Lo and behold, true, and I was only at 88 (not, say, 108). I was kind of in disbelief.

The guy actually taking the blood was sort of humorless (although we got him to lighten up a couple times), but the woman taking my vitals had all kinds of tattoos coming out of her jacket, and another guy there helping out told me that I was the kind of person that really brightened peoples’ days (all that constant vivacious chatter is good for something!). On top of that, they had Cougar Mountain cookies, and as anyone who lives around here and has had them will tell you, they are magnificent (unless you’re vegan). And not full of crap.

But apparently giving blood does an excellent number on your blood alcohol if you have anything to drink. With my 21st birthday coming up tomorrow, this should be interesting.

Get (or renew) a passport (read all 2 entries…)
hooray, hooray; I'm off in just over two weeks 3 years ago

GUESS WHO GOT THEIR PASSPORT TODAY

(THAT WOULD BE ME)

And two weeks from Saturday, guess who is getting on a plane to San Francisco? And, more importantly, flying from there to London?

(THAT WOULD ALSO BE ME, ALONG WITH MY BOYFRIEND)

Who is THRILLED?

(ONE GUESS)
