Two months ahead of schedule!
Now just to fight the temptation to show her before our anniversary! I’ve shown several people at work and some of our family. The integrated digital picture viewer has drawn a unanimous “wow”!
I’ve been doing woodworking for 5 years now, and this is my proudest achievement—mostly because I challenged myself on this more than any other project, and forced myself to learn several new techniques, risking making mistakes at the reward of developing new skills.

I started on it a few weeks back. I have the lid constructed, and the box assembled. I have the holes drilled in the bottom to mount the movement and for the external windup mechanism. And I have the insets cut for the hinges I bought. I could have this done in another couple of days, but I’m getting really ambitious the intricacies and features I want to add.
I need to add a glass cover to protect the movement, and I want to include a digital photo display in the underside of the lid to show pictures of our first 5 year together. Trouble is, they don’t make digital frame displays as small as the box—I may be need to use a low-rez keychain digital photo display. Not what I had in mind, but that’s all I can find.

I think trains are by far the most romantic method of travel. A few years ago, my wife and I took a multi-leg train trip from Chicago to NY to Boston to DC and back to Chicago, with a sleeper car for the long, overnight stretches…boy was that romantic. And so relaxing.
I hope someday the U.S. builds a high-speed rail system. We’d use that all the time.
I also hope someday to ride the Canadian rail system—I hear its very comfortable and much more elegant than anything here in the states. Maybe take a train trip in the fall and watch the changing colors….
