I’ve been trying for ten years. I write a chapter, sometimes two, but eventually I think, Well, shouldn’t character X do this instead? Or wouldn’t it be so much more interesting if this happened? Then I get distracted by the change and it takes a few months to wrap my head around it before I can focus again. I’ve changed it so many times I don’t know if it’s the same story. I wish I could just buckle down and get it on paper.

It was always my dream to work in publishing. I majored in English in college and found a job (not the ideal job but a job) in the editorial department at a large publisher. Two years later, I’ve realized that this business isn’t for me! What do you do when you find out that your dream job isn’t so amazing after all? I’ve been exploring other interests, but I can’t make any kind of decision. Ultimately I’m going to have to pick a grad school or another job and just take the plunge. I miss having a goal and knowing that I’m working towards what I want. I’m glad that I do have some choices at this point, but I fear that I’ll make the wrong decision again and will end up spending my life doing something I hate. How do I find a new purpose?
