London Super Comic Con

I went to the London Super Comic Con and had a fantastic time! I dressed up as Alana from my favorite comic Saga, though compared to the other cosplayers’ outfits, it would have been easy to assume that I wasn’t in a costume. I listened to a presentation about Spiderman by write Dan Slott and got him to autograph my copy of Superior Spiderman #1. He was really nice and even posed for a few pictures with me. Totally worth the 2 hour wait in line.

Loan 19: Alba Lucia

It’s clear to Alba, 30, that her priority is her family’s well-being and that to attain it any sacrifice is small. Because of this, she decided five years ago to leave the firm she worked for to care for her children who are 15 and 5 years of age. At the same time, she decided to open a small store at home to cover household expenses and guarantee better living conditions for her children. Today, she’s happy with her business and feels that it was the best decision because her work allows her to care for her children.

Her greatest dream is to see her business grow to become a self-service market. She’s currently asking for a loan to buy school supplies to increase her sales level and take advantage of the back-to-school season. She hopes to continue growing as a micro businesswoman and to improve her family’s quality of life.

Loan 16: Saria

Kiva now distributes loans in India!

Saria is a 56-year-old married woman living with her husband and her 19-year-old son. She is suffering from leprosy. She is a hardworking person and has developed a good rapport with her neighbors through her small business. She runs a betel shop with the support of her husband, who is a security guard. HOBY WLC 2012: Create Yourself

I was fortunate enough to be chosen as a Facilitator for Group I3 once again for this year’s HOBY WLC. 10 days of high energy, little sleep, and intense discussions about leadership and global problems is daunting, but I would do it all over again tomorrow to bear witness to the deep personal growth that I saw occur in 426 international teenagers. My group was the best I could have asked for and they shined throughout the week. I love being a part of the HOBY Family and hope that I will be lucky enough to continue my volunteering at WLC for many years to come.
