I’ve been trying to find a time when my insane schedule would allow time to visit my car mechanic whom I adore but haven’t been able to get there for months. When everytime I turn on the car it would beep little reminders at me that my breaks are bad, my tires need replacing and I need an oil change soon, very soon, I would renew my promise that I would find a time to visit my mechanic. As the reminders have become more persistant, I’ve become more concerned about the damage I was inflicting on my poor car with my neglect. So out of sheer desperation, I took an unplanned turn into a JiffyLube type place to at least make sure my car could get an oil change before it blew up or anything else equally insane until I could find the time for it to have a long leisurely and much needed visit with my trusted mechanic. The plan went perfectly until later that night. As I was driving my newly lubed car home, I noticed it was driving oddly. Turns out one of my tires was pancake flat, unrecoverable and another one is severely damaged and not long for this world. And as an added bonus it turns out have really snazzy tires that apparently can’t be replaced individually but must be replaced as a full set of 4. Grrr… For about a minute I was feeling good about making progress on this goal. Ugh…. although, I suppose buying all new tires will make great progress towards maintaining my car. Guess I’ll be making progress on this goal afterall…

How I did it: I’ve tried my whole life to take vitamins regularly. Bought all the trendy supplements, the sorting holders, tried leaving myself notes, every trick in the book, all with no success. I would make it a couple of weeks tops and then the hectic pace of life would eliminate all thoughts of vitamins from my mind until things quiet back down and I realize just how badly I suck at taking vitamins. So a month or so ago I started having some medic… Read how I did it…
How I did it: I bought a new car that was stick shift even though at the time I couldn't drive a stick shift yet. They dealership wanted $3,000 to "upgrade" to an automatic transmission. I figured for three grand I can stop being lazy and finally learn how to drive stick. Bought the car (with stick shift) had my boyfriend drive it home and one day he and I went out for a driving lesson. It took a fe… Read how I did it…
When I started my job at the hotel, that’s all it was… a job. Then quickly it became a career, something I wanted to do with my life. 3 promotions in under 2 years, things were progressing so quick I could hardly keep up. And then came 2009. My hotel unfortunately battled the same economic misfortunes that plagued the rest of the country, we laid off some amazing people, cut back pay-roll hours, the whole nine yards. And my career path, while remaining secure (thankfully) leveled out. So, with 2010 I’m looking forward to regaining the momentum that I once had and moving towards the next big goals on my path. First, Assistant Front Desk Manager. Then Front Desk Manager. Then Front Office Manager. One step at a time but I’m excited to take the next step on the path…
A funny thing happened on the way to this goal… I found a new career. At least that’s what I thought. I have spent most of my adult life working in bars with the goal being to open up one of my own. But the need for stability and those ever crutial benefits lead me to ditch the nightlife and get a “real job”. So I got a job at a hotel. Oddly, it didn’t take me long after working there to get the sense that this is the path I should have been on all along. Everything has just fallen into place since I started at the hotel, my vision of what I want my future to be became crystal clear, not just a hazy goal at the end of the tunnel. I found it so strange that I know without question this is what I should be doing with my life but there was never any sign or hint that I should go into the hotel business besides the quirk of fate that lead me there.
Then a few months ago I was going through some old journals and stumbled across old goal lists from years ago, junior high, high school, when I had each of my two kids, etc… I had goals in almost all of those lists relating to owning/running my own hotel. I even sketched out concepts for how I want my hotel to look. It wasn’t until I got much older and started working in bars that my goals in the hotel world morphed into opening a bar. I still find it funny that I had forgotten how passionate I once felt about this business and now feel again, only so much moreso. So this goal is going to morph once again, back to where it started and where it should have stayed. Instead of owning a bar, I’m focusing on becoming the GM of a hotel. And in a strange way, it’s a combination of the best of both worlds, because once I am running my own hotel, it will have a bar in it that I’ll be running as well. Two goals for the price of one…
