How I did it: Well from the age of 12 I realized that I "needed" to get braces. Unfortunately my parents never had dental coverage which meant as I child I never had dental coverage. Paying out of pocket was also not an option. I love this idea. Although I have allotted 10% of my income as “play” money, I have not purchased anything for myself in a very long time. A new head to toe outfit with accessories in one day would definitely be a treat. I just need to make sure I plan it right to avoid any frustrations.
The original goal was to save 3 months of living expenses in an emergency fund – that was before the events such as Lehman Brothers collapsing and the Dow Jones plummeting 777 points in one day. The revised goal is to have about 10 and half months saved ($10,000) for emergencies only. After numerous lifestyle changes such as moving back to my parents house, becoming obsessed with living frugally, and recently taking on a second job I am about half way there. The plan is to save 50% of my income until I reach that magical number.
