Technically speaking I guess I have already “learned to ski.” However, I would not necessarily be able to say “I am a skier” or feel confident going skiing with experienced skiers for a weekend trip…yet.
I have always wanted to learn how to ski (alpine and nordic). My family would take afternoon nordic trips until I was about 5. But as some of you may know NOTHING is fun in the winter when you can’t feel your toes, hands, arms, legs, nose etc. So with three children who did nothing but complain my parents stopped taking us out skiing so often, we became involved in other things and time moved on. But I always loved watching my parents and other nordic skiers float across the snow effortlessly, and watching skiers mount the magical chair lifts and turn sharply down the hill.
So here I am, christmas break meeting up with some friends I hadn’t seen in a while. We were at a movie and they were planning a ski trip for the next day. One of them turned to me and asked if I’d like to come. So sure enough the next day there I am learning everything. I felt like suck a helpless little child again while my friends taught me everything.
Things I didn’t know:
How to attach a ski pass
What to wear skiing in -30 weather (its more complicated than you’d think)
how to put on ski boots/how tight they should be
how to put on skis
how to get on a chair lift
tighten your helmet
oh yeah and actually ski
So the day went on, I had a little lesson with my friends. Took a discovery lesson with an instructor. And tried my hand at a few hills. Then I got too ambitious, I tried the square hill with my friends, hit some trees. But got back up still loving the feeling of skiing.
I came home and eagerly told my parents about it. Now three weeks later and I have my own set of used gear, and I’m taking lessons at a local hill.
So I’ve progressed quite a bit, and now I feel a little more confident on mid-sized hills. However I’m still only doing linked snow plow turns and I still want to get much more confident so that I can attempt any hill on the mountain.
Happy Skiing!
