Go on an archaeological dig
I would LOVE to do this 13 months ago

I want to major in archaeology at Yale—anyone have any good websites for expeditions—preferably for teens and adults alike, not just limited to experience and age above 17. Thanks!

learn 10 languages (read all 2 entries…)
Progress... 13 months ago

Well, after reviewing my high school corse schedule, it appears as if it will be impossible to meet my goal of fluency in 10 languages by the time I am out of high school. However, I can become fluent in four more not counting English:

Spanish: 1 year to go
German: 3 Years to go
French: Have not started
Mandarin: Only completed a one year course (almost impossible to reach fluency in under 8 years, so this one is iffy)
Russian: Will be hopefully starting this summer. Anyone know how long this will take?

get into an ivy league school
Oh... to go to an Ivy! 13 months ago

I have always loved Yale and would love more than anything else to get in. I kind of actually despise Gilmore Girls now… just because competition is even higher since Rorie’s acceptance. I am a freshman in high school and am quite worried about my future concerning the Ivy’s. I would die if I didn’t get into Yale, but for the life of me I can’t think of anything I could do to stand out! I know that I should start some program or after school club for like under-privileged children, but I have not the faintest clue as to how I should go about this! I thought I could possibly start a tennis club, for I love tennis, but there really aren’t that many children in my area that are under-privileged, and even if there were, I have no idea as to how I could get anyone to join. I also play the viola, but am not talented so that won’t work, unless I ask a prodigious friend to help… hmm…. Well, if anyone has ANY helpful tips or suggestions, I would love the advice! And for those of you who have been accepted/are currently students of Yale, any advice on your part would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Study more
I just need to FOCUS! 13 months ago

I want to go to Yale, yet I seem to have become increasing lazy since summer. I just need to focus and get going. I would like to study at least three hours a day, but I don’t really think I have that much willpower. What am I going to do??? Urg… I MUST GET OFF THE COMPUTER AND STUDY STUDY STUDY… just after I finish setting some more goals for myself :D

read war and peace
Well, I started... 13 months ago

So I checked the book out from the library, but when I was walking home from school I got it wet and don’t really want to touch it, lol. I guess I will just buy it- along with “The brothers Karamazov”, “Crime and Punishment”, and “Anna Karenin”. Anyone have any good suggestions?

Buy a piano
Help please! 13 months ago

How much does a keyboard cost? I would like to buy one and start playing piano…

learn to play the viola
I am so bad... 13 months ago

I played for three years (never practiced) and started playing again after a break of two years. I am now playing in high school and am having great difficulty. I am trying to practice more often now, but my orchestra teacher dislikes me a great deal and always makes me do solos in front of the class to embarrass me (because I am really bad and the people around me have one countless awards and go to competitions al over the world). I would love to quit, but I desperately want to go to Yale University, and music is always a great thing to put on an application. However, I do not hold the primary position, so I am starting to think that this might weaken my application. What do I do???

play the piano
Piano lessons... wishing... hoping... 13 months ago

I have been trying to convince my neighbor for months now to teach me how to play the piano. I have offered to pay, but he has always avoided the subject one way or another. This is annoying me slightly- I only want to be able to play so as to improve in orchestra, yet I don’t have a piano, nor a keyboard and I doubt my parents would ever let me get one. I am not really sure what to do. I want to go to Yale, a school that has a suffering music department, so this could be beneficial. However, at the same time, it might hurt my chances considering the fact that I would just be starting and would definitely never win anything through this new found interest so it my just weaken my application. I need HELP!!

write a book and have it published
Write a book 13 months ago

I have been wanting to write a book for sometime now, but never seem to prioritize it, I think I will- although among all the goals I have set for myself, it’s going to be quite a challenge.

I need some topic ideas first and would love it if someone could help me out.

*History
*Historical Fiction
*Politics
*Fiction

are all some of my interests. Any suggestions? Thanks!

travel
I would REALLY love to TRAVEL the the WORLD! 13 months ago

I have always loved to learn- especially about foreign cultures and languages. I just wish my family would travel outside the US. Ah well, I will just have to save up and possibly go with friends when they travel?

run a mile in 5 minutes
Oh, I wish so much that I could! 13 months ago

My best time is only a bit under 7:30, so I have decided that I really need to pick up the pace! I am setting a goal right now to go for a mile every day on my elliptical- don’t think I will have that much time, but I will hopefully do this at least three times a week. Wish me luck!

do the splits
Do the splits! 13 months ago

I have always been quite flexible for my gender, so a friend dared me to learn the splits (only front) in a week, so I am going to try my best! Hope I can, although from what I am reading, one week isn’t nearly enough time. Any tips? Anyone done it in a week?

learn 10 languages (read all 2 entries…)
Oh... to learn ten languages.... 13 months ago

I would love to learn at least five fluently before college, but seeing as I have literally almost no resources available to me (or rather I do, but my parents forbid it because of my already large workload), so I am stuck.

1.)English: check
2.)Spanish: Okay, could get by fairly well- a little more vocab and fluency practice and I will be proficient
3.)German: Learning- taking a high school course for the first time so I am just getting started
4.)French: Basically, this is the only school language course that is left for me to take, so I suppose I shall begin this one next year (after I finish up Spanish over the summer)
5.)Mandarin: Will hopefully be going to China summer of 2010 so I am planning on taking some courses from a friend’s mom. I can speak a little- although nowhere close to being able to communicate well. My pronunciation is great though!
6.)Russian: I have lots of Russian friends so I would like to start taking Russian, then I could practice my fluency with them! Also, there is a college scholarship available that I would like to have- but it requires great fluency in Russian
7.)Dutch?: I think it would be beneficial just because there are several languages close to it, meaning it wouldn’t be that hard to accomplish fluency in them- I hope.
8.)Suggestions?
9.)Suggestions?
10.) Suggestions?

8,9, and 10 are left open for suggestions. I would like them to be filled by a useful language that would make it easier to learn more similar ones. Such as Portuguese can be learned by fluency in Spanish in a minimal time period. Suggestions from people with similar goals would be helpful! Thanks!

go to China
I would REALLY love to go to China 13 months ago

My friend’s mom is hopefully going to take me next time they go- probably summer of 2010 which will be the summer after my Sophomore year in high school. I have been saving, but every time I get any money whatsoever, I spend it on books! Does anyone have any tips on how to earn and save money for this trip? Also, the plan is to go to Jiangsu and Nanjing, because they have family there, but I really don’t want to go all the way to China and not visit the Terra-cotta warriors, the great wall, the great Buddha of Leshan, Sechuan, etc! The problem with this is the money and I am not sure if they would be willing to spend it and go with me (my mother would never allow me to go by myself to these places of course). Have any tips? Thanks!

Learn to speed read
Resources and materials? 13 months ago

Hi all, I would really love to improve my WPM which I think would greatly help with school and all the classics/texts/plain-old-boring-books that I would love to get through quickly. I have tried two books, both of which were absolutely no help at all, If anyone has any info on resources (e.g. audios, websites, books, etc) or reviews please share them, I would greatly appreciate it! BTW, I have been hearing a lot about spreeder.com, anyone have some info or perhaps a review- good or bad? Thanks!
