don’t know what to feel
it’s all so soft and silent, still
I must be somewhere

1: Nena – 99 Lufballons (1984). Nena’s German is the main attraction of this song. I wonder why they never sent it to Eurovision. It is simple enough, isn’t it?
2: The Velvet Underground – Waiting for the man (1966). So simple, it’s haunting. I could listen to a half-hour version. Compare this to what the Beatles and the Stones did at the time.
3. John Cale – Chinese Envoy (1982). I suppose the former was very much a Lou Reed song. To honour John Cale I list this great song.
4. The Cure – Friday I’m in love (1992). To prove that these Brits are not always morose. It seems they did not sweat too much over the lyrics.
5. Gram Parsons – A Song for You (1972). The most sensitive cowboy you can ever imagine. Even if you don’t like C&W you should listen to this one.
6. The Beatles – Hey Jude (1968). It wouldn’t be difficult to make a 43-list with just Beatle songs, the choice is quite arbitrary.
7. John Lennon – Imagine (1971). The former is a McCarthy song, so let’s continue with a Lennon classic.
8. Jimmy Hendrix – Hey Joe (1967). A great song in the version of a young Hendrix, who would eventually grow up to play Machine Gun (1970). Alas, so short a career.
9. Abba – I have a Dream (1979). I know I should not list this one. Take Dancing Queen if you must, but not a tearjerker. Sorry, can’t help it.
10. Stevie Wonder – Love’s in need of love today (1977). Long time since I last heard Songs in the Key of Life, and I’m not certain which song to choose. I’m afraid I’m not the only one that is neglecting this album.
11. Led Zeppelin – Since I’ve Been Loving You (1971). Didn’t want to mention Stairway to Heaven, so chose this one. Sweet memories.
12. Paul Siebel – If I Could Stay (1970). Not everyone knows Siebels work, that’s a shame. More painful memories this time, but that’s how it is. Now I really should list some post-1980 songs.
13. Thelonious Monster (with Tom Waits) - Adios Lounge (1992)
14. The Pixies – Where is my mind? (1988)
15. Eagles – Hotel California (1977) A one-hit-wonder, to me.
16. Elvis Presley – Heartbreak Hotel (1956)
17. Pink Floyd – Whish you were here (1975)
18. Joni Mitchell – Big yellow taxi (1970)
19. Bob Marley – No woman, no cry (1975)
20. Chuck Berry – Johnny B. Goode (1958)
21. Aretha Franklin – Do right woman, do right man (1967)
22. Janis Joplin – Get it while you can (1971)
23. Patti Smith – Land (1975)
24. Tammy Wynette – Stand by your man (1968)
25. The Impressions – First Impressions (1975)
26. The Pretenders – Brass in Pocket (1980)
27. Radiohead – Creep (1992)
28. R.E.M. – Everybody Hurts (1994)
29. Robert Cray – Right Next Door (1986)
30. Neil Young – Cortez the Killer (1975)
31.
32. Little Eva – The Loco-Motion (1962)
33. The Rolling Stones – Gimmie Shelter (1969)
34. Van Morrison – Angeliou (1979)
35. Bob Dylan – Forever Young (1974)
36. Bruce Springsteen – Badlands (1978)
37. The Band – The Weight (1968)
38. Leonard Cohen – Famous Blue Raincoat (1971)
39. Talking Heads – Give me back my name (1985)
40. The Doors – Riders on the storm (1971)
41. Randy Newman – Short People (1977)
42. The Beach Boys – Good Vibrations (1966)
