My wife and I had a dream… to quit our corporate jobs and drive our 1978 Volkswagen campervan south to the end of the road.
In all we drove through 24 countries, four continents, over 60,000 miles in Mexico, Central America, South America and Africa.
Upon returning home we wrote and self-published a book about our journey. We’ve sold the books at swap meets, farmers markets, wine tastings and car shows. In the past year we’ve done more than a hundred presentations at Rotary meetings, libraries, museums, travel groups and the Sierra Club.
...and just when we’re almost sold out of books and getting ready to set out on a new journey, National Geographic Adventure magazine has published an article about us (October 2006 cover story, Big Dreams).
Life sure is funny… when you put yourself out there.

China Airlines has cheap flights to LAX to Bangkok right now. Our passports are at the consulate in LA getting 60 day visas, our bikes are in the last stages of fine tuning and we’re flying out in less than a month.
Holy cow, less than a month….

This is a photo of my wife Amanda and I, along with our 1978 Volkswagen campervan on top of the Andes in Ecuador. We drove from San Diego, through Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama then shipped our van to Ecuador.
In all we spent a year in South America before we shipped the van to Africa. The entire journey lasted three years, 60,000 miles and 24 countries. While we had incredible adventures we were never robbed, never physically harmed nor threatened. It’s not as scary out there as tv makes you believe. Go for it!
After returning home we wrote a book about our journey and are now getting ready to head out on a new adventure, cycling through Asia.
We have tons of details on our web site www.vwvagabonds.com and are happy to help anyone… even with the most basic details… email us.
