Summer of 1988/89 and 1992/93 I cycled clockwise around South Island New Zealand and loved it both times. The differences were small four years apart. Going back now worries me because of the stated policy of the NZ Government to triple tourism from 1993 onwards, and so to some extent I actually dread cycling there again. But . . . the scenery is sooooo….. beautiful that it deserves another look (probably the last).

Coming from the ‘frozen’ UK there is a place in the world where the people are open, warm, friendly, spontaneous, musical and live in a tropical paradise. Many of them are also poor, disabled, homeless, starving, forced into petty crime to survive and envious of the richer European visitors. But it is possible to visit knowing this, without taking advantage and still to have a great time, my favourite place on earth.

I’d like to make a documentary about the history of housing in the UK, not necessarily in the short term, it may take ten years.
