First Lesson 2 years ago

So I took the plunge, literally, and signed up to swim classes. The good thing was I was the only one there so I had one on one instruction. The bad thing was I was the only one there.
This is what I have learned so far, if you want to learn to swim, make sure it’s private lessons, where you can go at your own pace. I am sure if I had other people in the class with me, I would feel rushed or ashamed, though they would also be learning how to swim, I may feel bad if I can’t just understand or “get it.”
The second thing is that go at your own pace. The instructor was nice and pushed me along but when I felt uncomfortable about doing something, I told her no. And I didn’t back down, I said, no, I will do this when I am more comfortable. Luckily, my instructor is a teenage so I can intimidate her. When I was ready, I did do some of the things she asked me to do, but I had to be ready.
The biggest fear that day was face in the water and as soon as I did it, I froze and freaked out. It took me about 10 mins to do it without freezing, still nervous, but it got better. I did the kickboard to the end of the pool where it was 5 ft deep but since I am a small person anyway, it was plenty deep for me and I panicked then. Good thing for kickboard.
Overall, it was good, I am sure I did not accomplished as much as the instructor would want me to but since I have her complete attention, I am going to use it to my advantage and do what is comfortable to me but still moving on. Small steps.

Body rebelling 2 years ago

My first day of exercise was torture to my body, that’s the price I pay for 4 months of not working out. The second day was much better, i actually felt better afterwards. As far as food, it’s been ok, not as hard as I thought and because I am eating healthier, my famiy is eating healthier, my daughter turned down chips for some oranges instead. She had some chips and said, you know, i like the clementines better. Now that’s an accomplishment!

Don't Panic 2 years ago

That’s what I am going to tell myself at my first swimming class. I can semi-swim, I can float on my back and swim under water but doing it freestyle just freaks me out. The whole coming up for air and not getting water in your mouth just isn’t comprehensible to me. Of course, when I was very young, they threw me into the pool, thinking, sink or swim, well, guess who sank? It took me maybe a year afterwards to not cringe at the water even from the shower.

I don’t understand who people are just able to wade in the water, playing Marco Polo or whatever, it doesn’t seem possible to me, I am sure if they drew me a chart on the whiteboard and game me a lot of scientific explaination, then I might be able to understand it.
