what I did:
-finally became debt free
-set up two savings accounts (life insurance and ING) with very small monthly deposits that are totally automatic (painless savings!)
-got into a “save the change” plan with my bank. Each time I pay with my debit card, the sum is rounded to the next 5 and the “change” goes in a savings account.
-cancelled all the useless subscriptions I had

things that helped me:
-automatic monthly transfer into a savings account (it doesn’t have to be a huge amount either)
-online banking to know how much I have in my account
-reassessing wants vs needs
-DIY
-trying to live by the “reduce, reuse, recycle” rule
-learning to say “No, I can’t afford it” (still hard sometimes but a second of weirdness is much better than hours of stress)
