My next initiative is to establish a Detroit media advisory council. The council, made up of influential communications leaders, will approach all the major media outlets (Ch. 2, 4 & 7) with a proposal to establish a dedicated economic development and education desk at each of their respective stations.

It’s not enough to have an occasional “good news” story sprinkled in with the comparatively unimportant sports and weather, who each receive daily coverage. I realize the business and intellectual media covers these topics regularly; however, we need to reach the community at large through the mass-media stations they using to obtain their news.

If we can educate individuals on how unusual and extraordinary it is to have the multiple education, healthcare, manufacturing and distribution infrastructure systems we have in Michigan, every resident would have the ability to articulate what Michigan has to offer and to act as Detroit ambassadors. Perception is reality.

Additionally, by communicating the value of educational preparedness and how it directly impacts our ability to remain competitive on a global basis is of critical importance to our nation’s future prosperity. It’s time to communicate these issues in a meaningful way to counteract the “sound-bite” sensationalist media environment we currently tolerate.

Given the information and the opportunity, I believe more people would be called to act and play a part in doing what they can to revive our schools and our region. Detroit’s local broadcast community has historically lead the nation in stature; it’s time to lead again on this important initiative.
