I’m not sure if it’s the same everywhere, but here in the Netherlands here is how getting your first place works.
-You sign up at the city hall as ‘looking for a place’, preferably as soon as you’re 18. You start receiving mail (e-mail now) about free apartments and such.
-You respond to offers. However, everyone that signed up BEFORE you that also wants that same house has a place in line ahead of you.
-I’ve been on the list for 4 years now, and usually end up between 60th and 100th in line.
This is taking forever.
