First of all, you have to do this with a doctor’s supervision. I didn’t, and I crashed. But it’s always helpful to feel like you’re in control of yourself without medication. Just don’t be embarassed if you can’t!! People try to get off blood pressure medications without success as well, and it makes them no worse of a person than those who can control their blood pressure with diet and exercise alone. Depression is a multi-faceted illness (like all chronic illnesses), and to treat it requires changes in all areas of your life – including the possibility that you may need medicine. But it’s always best to not have to add additional chemicals to your body if you can.
