how to correctly send a message in the bottle 2 years ago

my silly little hubby decided to inform me that to really get the bottle to travel any sort of distance you need to go far out to the ocean to make the drop off or throw the bottle into the ocean when theres a riptide at the beach.

but im thinking, this is just a little bottle. its gonna get chomped up or crashed against some rocks or something. it cant really survive travel across an ocean???? who in the world has really found any bottles from the ocean carrying messages?
