As I became an adult and my life changed. I often wondered how my parents felt and thought moving into new phases of their lives in previous eras and historical times.
It gave me the idea to keep a set of journals: 1 for me and my thoughts, one for each of my children regarding what was on my mind as a parent, a man, the leader of the family and a real person during their growing up.
Finally, I keep a sketch book, and try to sketch at least one thing, anything, daily..although I am falling short on this one.
I think many see their parents as super heroes, an infallible force that they could themselves never live up to. However, as we ourselves go down the roads our parents traveled before us, we see glimpses of them as regular people. Simply put, they were just like us, and they were doing what they could, when they could, with what was available. I think having an intimate look at what was running through their minds at those times tells you a lot more about a person than you may ever know by just playing catch with them in the yard.
I want to leave a set of volumes that my children can read and gain a different view of me as a man, not just as a parent, that may give them insight or inspiration…or just make them laugh when they become parents.
I feel great running again. Will be doing a 5K this summer and fall, and possibly a sprint tri this winter.
:)
