I’ve done this on almost every continent (save Antarctica and Europe) and loved it every time. It’s amazing to feel like you are doing something that matters and to see the world in the process. I can’t think of a better way to travel.

If you are looking for some good programs, here are some friends and myself have looked into and/or traveled with:
i-to-i.com – short term, nonreligious, raise funds
Peace Corps – long term, paid for
Teen Mania Ministries – teenagers, religious, raise funds

There are tons of programs out there—so whatever you choose I can’t imagine anyone not loving their trip.

so go!

Visit San Francisco
Untitled

San Fran is amazing. My suggestions for those of you who are still planning your trips:
1. don’t be afraid to go alone! Stay in the Adelaide hostel and I promise you’ll make at least one friend.
2. Rent a bike. It’s like 15-28$ a day and you can see the whole city and even bike across the bridge to Sausolito—which is very worth doing!
3. Visit Sausolito—very different from San Fran and very beautiful. It was probably my favorite part of the trip.
4. Don’t plan out every moment. Let yourself have room for stopping and smelling roses
5. Catch the early ferry to Alcatraz or plan it ahead. If you are trying to buy your tickets same day on a weekend, good luck—unless you catch the 9AM ferry, which tends to have open seats.

Have a great time!
