How I did it: Hiked from the South Rim to the North Rim and back. One day down from the South Rim, one day across, one day up to the North Rim, and then reversed the hike. This was a very challenging hike and the only real downside is that there is donkey shit everywhere on the trails. Also, there were a lot of tourists. How I did it: I bought a plane ticket to Nepal and then bought air or train tickets to my next destination as I decided where I wanted to go. Pick some places you want to visit (e.g., the Great Wall of China, Prague) to give you a sense of direction and some goals, but leave lots of free time to go to unplanned places.
